Local Acton Info

In the past Acton used to be just a little village, named ‘farm by oak trees’ in Anglo-Saxon. But as the city of London started rapidly growing and developing, the area started to expand along with it, and today it is no longer a rural district, but a modern and comfortable part of the capita. Today, it has approximately 2000 houses and more than 5800 residents and also homes the biggest housing estate in West London – South Acton Estate.

Situated five miles away from the center Acton is a part of West London, located mostly in the London Borough of Ealing, with the rest of its territory belongs to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and the London Borough of Hounslow. Here is the area with the biggest concentration of railway stations in London. There used to be a central main road to Oxford and London, running through Central Acton.

From medieval times in Acton is situated the big market and is still today one of the interesting local sights. The growth of the trading and shopping buildings once positively influenced the area’s expansion and development. In the perioud between 1920’s and 1930’s was the strongest time for shopping in Acton. The Poore family, who owned a large ironmongers business in High Street, constructed a covered market hall and an open market, as well in Crown Street.

Acton also became famous for its laundries, as there were more than 170 laundry- service structures here, by the end of the 19th century. They served hotels and wealthy people in the West End of London.
