Local Barnes Info

The London suburb called Barnes is situated right in a loop of the River Thames and it includes the Barnes Village conservation area. That is a historic village area, located on a pond – very popular destination for visitors of Barnes.

In the area are found interesting buildings of historical and architectural significance, which originate from 18th and 19th centuries. The famous The Terrace, consisting of Georgian mansions lining along a road, is situated in the west bend of the river. Here are examples of the oldest riverside housing, dating back to1720. Blue plaques mark as historical places, some of the houses, where notable people used to live. Some of them are Ninette de Valois and Gustav Holst.

The original Norman chapel of St Mary’s is remarkable with its history – its construction is traced back to the perioud between 1100 and 1150. The pink-fronted Rose House is also an old building dating back from the17th century.

An interesting building in Barnes is also the original red brick police station, built in 1891. The construction was later remodeled as an apartment. Its in itial features, though, have not beebarnesn lost.

It is worth mentioning the famous Olympic Studios, which used to be situated here and in which David Bowie, Queen, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimi Hendrix, The Verve have recorded, as well as other great names from the pop music world, such as Duran Duran, Massive Attack, Bjork, Coldplay and Madonna herself.
