Local Chiswick Info
In West London, on a meander of the River Thames, lies the area of Chiswick. Nowadays a residential district in the capital, once it used to be a rural area, with a small fishing village situated on the riverside, mainly around the old St. Nicholas Church. Its later fame, however, was of an essential brewery centre in London’s outskirts.
During the Blitzkrieg, Chiswick suffered the horrific devastations of between 80 and 90 air raids, but it finally survived. Although, it was one of the areas most severely affected during the war, buildings were later completely reconstructed.
Chiswick is an area easily reached, thank to the fact that there’s a direct link to Heathrow airport and the M25 motorway.
The famous Champions Race between Cambridge and Oxford finishes exactly here, in Chiswick – past the Chiswick Bridge.
Maybe one of the most interesting buildings in the area is The Chiswick House, with its remarkable architecture, dating back to the perioud between 1725 and 1729. With its symmetrical lines, it is probably the best preserved example of a Neo Palladian building in London.
Chiswick is proud with its notable former and current residents, such as Elizabeth McGovern, Kate Beckinsale, Oscar-winning Helen Mirren and Elizabeth McGovern. Bruce Dickinson – the popular front man of Iron Maiden also owns property in the neighbourhood.
