Local Finchley Info
Finchley N3 is a London area, situated in North London. It has three town centres and is today one of the most desired places to live in the capital.
The area received its name from a Saxon’s land and it is supposed to mean either ‘bird’, or it could be simply a personal name. The second part is believed to mean an opening in a forest area. A large hog market and the production of high-quality hay gave the fame of Finchley in the old days. For agriculture producing hay was a major and important activity back in the 19th century.
The area distinguishes itself with the fact that it is proud to be associated with many fiction characters in different films. For example, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It is also worth mentioning the comedy sketch Monty Pyton’s Flying Circus. In several series of the Peep Show comedy, there are also such characters.
Finchley, of course, has a lot more to offer. Some local sites, worth seeing are the beautiful statue of The Archer, Finchley Central tube station, Victoria Park, St Mary’s at Finchley, the Stenberg Centre for Judaism, The Bothy, Finchley Lobe, Arts Depot and Finchley Library.
The Woodside park station was constructed in 1867. It was then, when the population of the area started fast to grow larger and respectively the housing, too. Later, the tramline from Archway to Whetstone was finished.
The novelist Will Self, the musician Steven Stapleton and the actor Terry Thomas are only a few of the famous people, connected to Finchley.
