Local Acton Highbury Info

Highbury N5 is an area of London, which belongs to the London Borough of Islington. In the Southern part of the area there was a huge building of Italianate villas until the 1870s. There was a second essential to Highbury’s looks perioud. Until 1918 the area needed more housing, due to the dense population of the district. A lot of terraced, close packed houses were erected and although this process went on mostly in the north part of the area, free spaces continued to be filled with new constructions.

Although many parts of N5, such as Highbury Corner were destroyed during World War II, they were later completely reconstructed and some were replaced with new buildings.

Maybe many people connecte the name of Highbury with Arsenal. Woolwich Arsenal F.C. moved north to Highbury in the year of 1913. On part of the St John’s Hall region in Aubert Park then was build the Arsenal Stadium. In 2006, it was replaced in Ashburton Grove. A housing complex was erected in the place of the old stadium. Highbury Square is the name of the new housing complex.

The famous Wessex Studios were situated in Highbury New Park in  N5 for fourty years. There recorded a lot of world-known artists and great music bands, like Genesis, the Rolling Stones, the Clash and Sex Pistols. The studio, which was created by Sir George Martin – the Beatles producer, was removed at 106, Highbury New Park, where is also its current location.
