Local Highgate Info
One of the most expensive residential quarters in the capital is Highgate N6.
Until Victorian times, the area located in the North part of London, used to be a village outside the city. Many green lands and open spaces are still included in its territory. Three ancient woods, the eastern part of Hampstead Heath, Highgate bowl and Waterlow Park are some of the area’s lush pieces of land.
Overlooking London, the center of N6 – Highgate village is situated on the top of a hill. It offers a lot of residential streets, restaurants, Gergian shops and pubs.
Jacksons Lane arts centre, St Michael’s Church and steeple and the Gatehouse inn are several places of interest, which you might find attractive, if you are visiting the area. Berthold Lubetkin’s Highpoint, dating back to the 1930s is also a place worth seeing.
Highgate School and the Chapel of St Michael are imposing red brick Victorian buildings, situated on Hampstead Lane and Highgate Hill.
One of the greatest sites of cultural and historical significance in Highgate is the famous atmospheric Victorian cemetery, where Christina Rossetti, George Eliot and Karl Marx were buried. In the same cemetery was also buried another great mind – Samuel Tailor Coleridge. He came in Highgate, while trying to fight opium addiction in 1871 and spent the rest of his life in the area.
