Local Kilburn Info
Kilburn is located in the north-west part of the capital and it lies within the territory of the boroughs of Brent and Camden. Still a small part of it is situated in Westminster. Northwest-southwest through the area runs Kilburn High Road, which used to be an ancient trackway, paved by the Romans.
Through Kilburn also runs a stream, which is connected to the area’s past. It runs from Hampstead down through Hyde Park and reaches down the waters of the River Thames. This stream is called River Westbourne and on its banks once grew what today we call Kilburn area. In 1950s it was piped and nowadays it is among the many underground rivers in the capital.
In the 18th century was discovered a well, near the Bell Inn. It was soon announced to be curing stomach ailments and became popular for its ‘medicinal waters’. Then the area became fashionable and there appeared a garden and a ‘great room’. Unfortunately the fame of Kilburn Wells declined in the 19th century and it remained visited just as a tea garden. Eventually it was demolished and later rebuilt.
Today, Kilburn is known as a modern, colourful and busy multicultural area, homing highest Irish and Afro-Caribbean population in London. The district is recognized as one of the 35 major centres in Greater London.
Some of the important local landmarks include the huge cathedral of St Augustine’s Kilburn, with its Gothic spire and ornate Victorian interior and The Tricycle Theater. The theater is a renowned arts centre, situated at Kilburn High Road north of Buckley Road. Mainly political drama and dramatisations of significant court cases are shown in it and that’s what makes it most attractive. It also includes also a gallery and a cinema.
One interesting fact is that pop-singer Lily Allen is one of the lucky notable residents of Kilburn.
