Local East Ham Info
East Ham E6 forms part of the London Borough of Newham, lying 8 miles north-east of Charing Cross. The origins of the area can be traced back to ancient times. It is included in the records of the Domesday Book of 1086 as a settlement named “Hame”, meaning “a dry area of land between rivers or marshland”. With the availability of railway transport, East Ham gradually moved towards urbanization.
A building of architectural significance with a landmark clock tower is the East Ham Town Hall, which is a Grade II listed structure. Victorian and Edwardian period houses make up the architectural outlook of the area. Although urbanization has changed the neighbourhood over the years, there are many green spaces, offering splendid opportunities for recreation. Those include Central Park, Plashet Park, Priory Park and Flanders Field. The graveyard of St Mary Church is given the status of a nature reserve.
With substantial numbers of foreign residents, including South Asian, African / Caribbean and eastern Europeans, East Ham is regarded an ethnically-variegated area of London. This is clearly obvious by the number of worship places belonging to different religions. Apart from the Christian St Michael’s Church and St Mary Magdalene, there is also a Hindu temple and several mosques.
Transport connections to other parts of the city are provided by East Ham tube station and a number of bus routes. The London City Airport is set within close distance.
People who are related to the area of East Ham are: Stan Earle, Perry Fenwick, Bryan Forbes, Walter Hancock and Dame Vera Lynn. Distinguished personalities such as Dianna, Princess of Wales, Freddie Mercury, Stewart Granger and Alfred Hitchcock are among Earls Court former residents. A number of blue plaques commemorating several prominent people can be found on the territory of the area. Those include: Howard Carter, Edwin Arnold, Dame Ellen Terry and Sir William Orpen.
