Local Islington Info
Islington N1 is the central area of the London Borough of Islington. In the past it was a favourite rural area for Londoners, where they relaxed amidst the vast green expanses. It was also a major milk and vegetables provider for the capital city. Consequently in the late 18th century it became a desirable place for permanent residence due to its favourable location. Later, in the 19th century it was renowned for the entertainment and night-life opportunities that could be found in the numerous music halls and theatres. However, it suffered great damages during the world wars and was later subjected to regeneration. Today it is a bustling London area, full of life and fascinating places to visit and admire.
A building of prominence in Islington N1 is the Royal Agricultural Hall, which has presently been incorporated into the Business Design Centre. Back in the 19th century it was the largest building of its kind, used for exhibition purposes and featuring 75 ft height and an arched glass roof. The Regent’s canal passes through the area. The home stadium of Premier league football club Arsenal, known as the Emirates Stadium is located in Islington. Prominent theatres are the Almeida Theatre and the Little Angel Theatre. A public amenity dedicated to the history of the area is the Islington Museum. Another great facility preserving the history is the Local History Centre.
Islington is also popular for being included in the British monopoly game. It was one of the cheapest properties on the board, which is not the case today, as Islington is home to a multitude of notable people: Douglas Adams, Lily Allen, Tony Blair, Kathy Burke, Jimmy Carr, Joe Cole, Johnny Depp, Colin Firth, Boris Johnson, Heath Ledger, Kate Winslet and many others.
