Local Bloomsbury Info

A prime residential and office area of the capital, Bloomsbury is situated in the absolute centre of London. The area is mentioned for the first time in the Domesday Book as a vineyard, while the name appears in records in 1201, when it was bought by a large Norman landowner. During the 17th century the Russell family, hereditary dukes of Bedford, began the construction of the large manors that shape the landscape of the area. The first ever specially designated square – Southampton Square, is located in Bloomsbury.

Since then it is precisely the squares that Bloomsbury is famous with. Russell Square, Bedford Square, Mecklenburg Square, Queen Square and Bloomsbury Square are architbloomsbury-thracian-cleanersectural and urban design jewels of London.

Bloomsbury can rightfully be considered to be one of the most important educational and cultural centres of London. The headquarters of the University of London, the University College Hospital, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the British Medical Association are all located here. The world’s famous British Museum also proudly stands in Bloomsbury.

Bloomsbury also gave its name to the famous cultural circle that reigned supreme in the English society in the beginning of the 20th century. Virginia Woolf and T.S. Eliot were its leaders. Along with them people like Charles Dickens, George Dance, John Maynard Keynes, Bob Marley and Ricky Gervais lived and still live in Bloomsbury.
