Local Deptford Info

Situated on the bank of river Thames, Deptford SE8 is a district of south-east London. Its name originates from a ford of the river Ravensbourne. The area is famous for having been home to Deptford Dockyard which was the earliest part of the Royal Navy Dockyards. SE8 is a place of rich history with references to Queen Elizabeth, Sir Walter Raleigh, Captain James Cook, the murder of Christopher Marlowe, etc.

The district used to be divided into two small parts – the first one was located on the ford and the second one was a fishing village on the river. The area is, though, mainly connected with the docks of Henry VIII.

Deptford is now a part of the London Borough of Lewisham. Deptford railway station is known for being one of the oldest stations in the world. One of the notable landmarks here is The Albany Theatre. It represents an arts deptford-thracian-cleanerscentre hosting concerts and different arts events which support the Deptford deprived community. Laban Dance Centre is another local landmark having quite attractive style and appearance. The Art in Perpetuity Trust is a beautiful studio centre and gallery.

Dog & Bell and The Bird’s Nest are the most popular pubs in SE8. The key open spaces are Brookmill Park, Ferranti Park, Deptford Park, Sayes Court Park and Pepys Park.

Other places of interest are Deptford High Street, Deptford Market, Tanners Hill, St. Paul’s, Deptford Station, etc.
