Local Islington Info

Once, Islington used to be just a small Anglo – Saxon village – just forestlands and a hog pasture. Later, there emerged a couple of villages. Its creameries, dairy farms and milk products became very popular.

Today it is a popular and important urban centre and desired residential destination in the northern part of London. The area started growing and developing together with London and a lot of residential buildings and terraced houses appeared. Beautiful old Georgian style terraces add to the charms of the area.

St Mary’s Church is the first church ever built in Islington. It dates back to the XII century. Another place of interest is the Royal Agricultural Hall and a large number of music halls. Here have performed Harry Tate, Vesta Tilley, Harry Lauder, George Robey and Marry Lloyd.

Some of the famous Islington residents are Joe Orton, Peter Pears, Benjamin Britten, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Samuel Phelps and Evelyn Waugh.
