Local Chiswick Info
Situated on a River Thames meander, Chiswick is a residential suburb of western London, which in the past used to be a rural area. On the riverside, there used to be a small village, which was concentrated around the old St. Nicholas Church. Later, the area, situated in the capital’s outskirts became famous as an important brewery centre.
During the Blitzkrieg, Chiswick suffered huge devastations. It was almost ruined by the air raids, numbering between 80 and 90. Although, today the buildings are all reconstructed, the area was one of the most negatively influenced by the War.
The direct link to Heathrow airport and the M25 motorway allow the area to be easily reached from any point of the capital.
When it comes to the architectural appearance of the area, maybe one of the most popular and interesting local sights is The Chiswick House, which was built between 1725 and 1729. It is characterized by symmetrical lines, typical for the Neo Palladian buildings. We might even say that it is probably the best preserved Neo Palladian building in the whole city.
Some of the notable Chiswick residents are Elizabeth McGovern, actor Hugh Grant, Oscar-winning Helen Mirren and Kate Beckinsale and many others, like Bruce Dickinson, who also owns property in the area.
