Local Islington Info
Islington is the third smallest London borough, situated in the northern part of the capital. It used to be just a small Anglo- Saxon village, but it has undergone really big changes and today it is a desirable neighbourhood for living. Islington is proud to be an important urban centre.
In the past the area consisted of a couple of villages and used to be just forest lands and pasture for hogs. Due to the dairy farms, creameries and other milk products, made there, Islington became very popular. Later, it started growing fast, together with London. A lot of new residential constructions and terraced houses were erected and a lot of squares appeared, too. High Street was completed.
Except for the residential part improvements, there were also many theatres and music halls built. The first church in the area was St Mary’s, dating back to the XII century. The Royal
Agricultural Hall was also built, where names as George Robey, Vesta Tilley, Harry Tate, Harry Lauder and Marry Lloyd performed.
The architectural style of the area distinguishes with beautiful terraces in old Georgian style, still present nowadays. If you are visiting the area, you might find it interesting to see the Angel tube station, Archway Park, Bingfield Park, Bunning Way Garden, the Almeida Theatre, the Business Design Centre, as well as The Camden Head public house.
