Local Kensington Info

An old Saxon settlement called ‘Kenesignetun’ gave the beginning of the modern and fashionable London area. The ancient Anglo-Saxon name means ‘meadow lands of Kenesigne’.

Today the area of west and central London, called Kensington is a renowned and busy district, desired as a place of residence. It belongs to the densely populated Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and is actually a bit overcrowded.

Although, as already mentioned, Kensington is preferred as a place to live, it is famous for being among the districts with the highest housing prices.

There are a lot of luxurious apartments in the area, but in an architectural aspect, it is actually remarkable with its huge terraced houses in typical Victorian and Georgian style. Picturesque and fashionable, the quarter is proud of its kensingtonstreets and garden squares like The Phillimores and Wycombe Square. Earls Terrace and Edwardes Square are other nice buildings – rebuilt Georgian constructions.

Kensington does not lack nice green open spaces, for example, Holland Park, Kensington Gardens and The Royal Park. These beautiful parks offer peaceful time out in the open air for visitors and residents of the area.

Some of the places worth seeing are Kensington Palace, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and the Science Museum, as well as the Royal College of Art, the Imperial College, Barkers Arcade, the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal College of Music.
