Local Notting Hill Info
Notting hill is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and attractive areas in the western part of the capital. It is famous and popular, because it is really cosmopolitan and modern. Once, it used to be called Nutting-barns”, “Knutting-Barnes” or “Knotting-Bernes”. This name is supposed to come from a huge manor located in Kensington. The area was only wastelands and forests.
Later, after the building of Ladbroke and the Norland estates, in Notting Hill began very active construction works. This gave a very quick start of the development of the area. A huge immigrant flood started after the World War II, mainly of African and Caribbean origin.
The area is known as the ‘bohemian quarter’ of London and its atmosphere is really artistic. The air of “alternative” culture style is even stronger due to the annual Notting Hill Carnival, which takes place in here. After the festival in Rio, this is the second biggest street festival and it attracts a great number of visitors every year.
The architectural style of the area also adds to the artistic atmosphere, with the terraced Victorian houses. Once, excellent bricks and tiles were made around Pottery Lane. Other popular places in N
otting Hill are KensingtonTemple, Louis Kossuth’s House, ColvilleSquareGardens, St. John’sGardens, Queen’s Park Library and other local attractions.
Here, around Clarendon Cross and the Westbourne Grove, are also found a lot of renowned restaurants and shopping centres, night clubs and leisure centres, expecting Notting Hill residents.
